NEW MUNICIPAL BUILDINGCITY OF COSMOPOLISCOSMOPOLIS, WASHINGTON
When black mold was discovered in their building, the Cosmopolis Police Department and Municipal Court were relocated to a modular building donated by a local timber company. This temporary solution was used far longer than intended, then the two departments grew and were forced to split, with the Court borrowing space in the local Fire Department building. Meanwhile, City Hall was moved into a local bank building.
A voter approved bond measure has now allocated $3 Million for a new building, which will house City Hall, the Police Department, and the Municipal Court and City Council all in one location. Harbor Architects LLC was selected to work with the City and a citizen-led advisory committee to help realize the goals of the many different departments and the needs of the area residents.
The Covid-19 pandemic hitting between the design and construction phases lead to some challenges with material price increases. When the first design no longer met the initial budget, a redesign effort began. The new plan utilizes the existing city hall structure and a new addition very similar to the initial design. Steps were taken to reduce the overall square footage and value engineering was performed to reduce costs where appropriate. Construction began in October of 2023.
